MIA is the largest U.S. gateway for Latin America and the Caribbean and is one of the busiest international passenger and freight airports in the world. Founded in 1928, it is operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and is the property of Miami-Dade County government. It is among the busiest airports in the world and there are over 80 airlines serving MIA to approximately 150 destinations around the globe. In 2011 the airport ranked first in the United States by percentage of international flights and second by volume of international passengers, behind only JFK.
